Ducks sports teams feature student athletes from around the world

The UO has had a global presence and an international flair long before the arrival of the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, with thousands of international students hailing from 99 countries enrolled at the university. 

That includes roughly five dozen student athletes competing across 13 sports in the recently concluded academic year and several playing major roles for their teams.

kemba nelson

The redshirt senior from Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a NCAA champion indoors in the 60-meter sprint, setting the then-collegiate record in the process. Nelson also placed second in the 100 at the NCAA Championships held this spring at Hayward Field and is a four-time Pac-12 champion including three titles—100, 200, 4x100—at this year’s conference meet in Eugene. 

In 2021, Nelson was the Pac-12 Championships runner-up in the 100 and finished fourth in the 100 meters at the NCAA Championships. She also nabbed seventh place in the 100 meters at the Jamaican Championships.

In his first competition as a Duck in 2021, Ihemeje broke the indoor school record in the triple jump and would go on to become NCAA champion in that event three times: twice indoors (2021 and 2022), and once outdoors (2021). He was the runner-up in the 2022 NCAA Championships at Hayward Field after winning the Pac-12 title in that event.

The redshirt sophomore from Bergamo, Italy, owns the school record and is tied as the No. 6 performer in collegiate history.

In 2021 Ihemeje represented Italy in the Olympics, advancing to the finals and finishing in 11th place.

Outdoors, he won his third Pac-12 decathlon title in addition to becoming the sixth UO man to break the elusive 8,000-point barrier and holds the sixth-highest mark in program history. He’s a three-time NCAA outdoor qualifier with a career-best finish of fifth in 2019.

The redshirt senior from Zbaszyn, Poland, represented her home country in the Tokyo Olympics in the steeplechase after winning the Polish Championships in a school record of 9:25.98 to earn a bid on the Polish Olympic team; placing 12th in her heat of the qualifying round. 

Earlier in 2021, Konieczek won the Pac-12 title in the steeple, breaking school, Pac-12 and meet records en route to her crown. At the NCAA championships, she became the No. 11 performer in collegiate history with a 9:34.37 showing in the semifinal round, placing ninth in the final.  

In 2022, the versatile Konieczek helped pace the distance medley relay team to third place at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Outdoors, she placed third in the steeplechase at the Pac-12 championships. She’s also been a key contributor to the women’s cross-country team where she was an all-conference and all-region performer this past fall.

Lin helped the Ducks as they went on to win Pac-12 and NCAA Regional titles — both firsts in program history. She then earned the best individual NCAA Championships finish in program history in fifth place overall while leading the Ducks to NCAA match play for the second time ever; Oregon went on to cap its unbelievable season as the NCAA National Runners-Up.  

Lin was a WGCA all-American and an All-Pac-12 first-team selection for the first time in her career as a senior, and she has twice made the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.

Nyara Sabally, a redshirt junior who is a native of Berlin, Germany, was selected with the fifth overall pick by the WNBA’S New York Liberty, becoming the fourth Oregon player in the last three years to be selected in the first round of the draft. 

Sabally, who earned her degree this year, also earned All-Pac-12 honors for the second straight year in 2021-22 after leading the team and finishing sixth in the conference in scoring. She also led the Ducks and ended the season third in the Pac-12 in rebounding, while finishing fifth in the league in field goal percentage. Sabally was also a College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District selection in her final season at Oregon.

A junior from Traralgon, Victoria, Australia, Charlton was named second team All-Pac-12 for the second consecutive year for the men’s tennis team. He finished with a 21-11 record in singles, including 11-7 in the dual season, playing at the No.1 spot for Oregon.

Charlton also anchored the No. 15-ranked doubles team in the country and became the second doubles team in program history to make the NCAA tournament and first since 2000 for the Ducks.

A junior punter for the football team out of Melbourne, Australia, Snee was called upon 44 times in the 2021 season and averaged 43.1 yards per punt, with nine kicks of 50 or more yards and 18 that pinned the opponent inside its own 20-yard line.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2020, Snee punted in all seven games for Oregon during the pandemic-shortened season. Snee also played in 10 games as a true freshman in the 2018 season.
